Visual Art / Literary Contests

Visual Art

  • Pencil Drawing (Age Groups: 5 to 8,  9 to 12,  13 to 17)
  • Painting (any medium) (Age Group: 5 to 8)
  • Watercolor Painting (Age Groups: 9 to 12,  13 to 17)
  • Photography (Age Group: 13 to 17)

Writing in English (Age Groups: 5 to 8,  9 to 12,  13 to 17)

General Rules

  • Registration for Visual / Literary and Stage events will  begin on January 28, 2018 at 8 AM CST and close on February 10, 2018 at 8 PM CST. GAMA reserves the right to close the registration before February 10, 2018, if deemed necessary.
  • Registrations will not be accepted after the deadline.
  • No walk-ins will be entertained.
  • All the required details regarding the participation/performance (name of participants, duration of program, DOB of participants etc.) should be provided through www.gama-austin.com no later than the closing date (February 10, 2018, @ 8 PM CST)
  • For a program item to be considered in a competitive category, there should be a minimum of 2 contestants/teams registered for it. If at least 2 registrations are not available, the event may be conducted as a non-competitive event.
  • First, Second and Third prizes will be distributed for each competitive item
  • For all group items – Names and DOB of all the participants should be provided
  • For all group items – The age of the oldest participant in the group will be considered while determining the age group of the event.
  • For all group items – There should be a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 8 members in a team to participate. 
  • Music files for stage events must be sent via email to saregama@gama-austin.com no later than Feb 13th, 2018 midnight.
  • All contestants should abide by the guidelines
  • All contestants must dress and conduct themselves appropriately, in conformity with accepted standards of dress code.
  • Contestants will be identified with Chest Numbers.
  • Contestants must be present when their names are called out before the item. If a contestant does not show up on the stage by the 3rd call, he/she/team will be disqualified
  • Contestants or parent/legal guardian of the contestant cannot challenge the decision of judges. Decision of judges will be final and binding.
  • All participants in solo and group items should pay the registration fees.
  • Any expected conflict with other events on the day of Stage or Literary event should be communicated well ahead of time via saregama@gama-austin.com to the SaReGAMA Organizers. Once the event is sequenced and reporting time emails are sent out to participants, request to change the event sequence time will NOT be entertained for any reasons.
  • Participants will be responsible for ensuring that they do not cause any loss or damages to goods or properties or parts of the venue. Participants will be fully liable for any injuries caused to themselves or the accompanying people, any loss and damages to goods or properties or parts of the venue caused by the participants or accompanying people.
  • GAMA Board of Directors / SaReGAMA organizers reserves the right to regroup and change the competition categories based on participation requests.
  • GAMA Board of Directors / SaReGAMA organizers reserve the right to accommodate, cancel or disqualify participants if they deem it necessary.
  • GAMA Board of Directors or SaReGAMA organizers are not responsible for any misplaced or lost personal belongings.

Age Group Criteria:

  • Age Group 5 to 8: Children born between 1 Feb 2009 and 31 Jan 2013 (both dates inclusive)
  • Age Group 9 to 12: Children born between 1 Feb 2005 and 31 Jan 2009 (both dates inclusive)
  • Age Group 13 to 17: Children born between 1 Feb 2000 and 31 Jan 2005 (both dates inclusive)

 For Malayalam Essay:

  • Age Group 7 to 12: Children born between 1 Feb 2005 and 31 Jan 2011 (both dates inclusive)
  • Age Group 13 to 17: Children born between 1 Feb 2000 and 31 Jan 2005 (both dates inclusive)

*For all group items – The age of the oldest participant in the group will be considered while determining the age group of the event. 

Event Rules

Rules for Essay Writing/ Poetry in English

  • Date: Feb 24, 2018
  • Time: Will be communicated closer to the event date
  • Venue: Behrens Ranch Residents Center, 2503 Arbor Drive Round Rock, TX 78681.
  • Essay writing contestants should submit their work on paper supplied by GAMA.
  • Contestants will be provided scratch paper for drafting.
  • Age group 5-8 years: One topic out of the selections given in the Topics section below will be chosen and provided to the contestants before the start of the competition at the venue.
  • Age groups 9-12 & 13-17: A topic will be provided to the contestants before the start of the competition at the venue.
  • No reference material will be allowed.
  • All electronic devices should be switched off at the competition venue.
  • A maximum of 45 minutes will be provided to complete the work.
  • Completed work should be submitted to the invigilator present at the competition venue.
  • Contestant should not record his/ her name anywhere on the sheet.
  • A separate sheet will be provided to record the Tag number assigned to the contestant. This sheet should be stapled to the submitted work.

Rules for Essay Writing in Malayalam

Rules for Pencil Drawing

  • Date: Feb 24, 2018
  • Time: Will be communicated closer to the event date  
  • Venue: Behrens Ranch Residents Center, 2503 Arbor Drive Round Rock, TX 78681
  • Contestants should bring lead pencil, sharpener, eraser and necessary tools. Charcoal pencils cannot be used.
  • Sketching/Drawing Paper will be provided by GAMA.
  • Coloring is not allowed for Pencil drawing at the venue.
  • Age group 5-8 years: One topic out of the selections given in the Topics section below will be chosen and provided to the contestants before the start of the competition at the venue.
  • Age groups 9-12 & 13-17: A topic will be provided to the contestants before the start of the competition at the venue.
  • A maximum of 60 minutes will be provided to complete drawing.
  • Completed drawing should be submitted to the invigilator present at the competition venue.
  • Contestant should not record his/ her name anywhere on the sheet.
  • Only Tag number assigned to the contestant should be recorded on the back side of the paper.
  • All electronic devices should be switched off at the competition venue.

Rules for Painting

  • Date: Feb 24, 2018
  • Time: Will be communicated closer to the event date  
  • Venue: Behrens Ranch Residents Center, 2503 Arbor Drive Round Rock, TX 78681
  • Contestants should bring necessary paint, brushes and tools for painting.
  • Kids up to 8 can use any coloring medium they are comfortable with (like watercolor, crayons etc.). Contestants above 8 years should use only watercolor as the coloring medium.
  • Paper will be provided by GAMA.
  • Age group 5-8 years: One topic out of the selections given in the Topics section below will be chosen and provided to the contestants before the start of the competition at the venue.
  • Age groups 9-12 & 13-17: A topic will be provided to the contestants before the start of the competition at the venue.
  • No reference material will be allowed.
  • A maximum of 60 minutes will be provided to complete painting.
  • Completed painting should be submitted to the invigilator present at the competition venue.
  • Contestant should not record his/ her name anywhere on the sheet.
  • Tag number assigned to the contestant should be recorded on the back side of the paper.
  • All electronic devices should be switched off at the competition venue.

Rules for Photography

  • Deadline: Feb 24, 2018 midnight.
  • Photograph should be unique and original.
  • Both color and black & white photos may be submitted. There is no separate competition for Color and black & white photos.
  • Digitally or otherwise enhanced or altered photos will not be accepted. Minor adjustments, including spotting, dodging and burning, sharpening, contrast and slight color adjustment or the digital equivalents, are acceptable.
  • If the judges determine that a photographer has altered his or her photo, they reserve the right to move the photo to Altered Images and disqualify it.
  • Altered Image is defined as: Photographs manipulated for artistic purposes by applying digital and/or traditional special effects (i.e. colorizing, toning, collage, photo composites, HDR, etc.).
  • Photographs must be in a .jpeg, .jpg or .gif format.
  • Files submitted may not be larger than 5Mb.
  • Only one photo can be submitted by a contestant.
  • Copyrighted photos/ images are not permitted.
  • Please send your entry to saregama@gama-austin.com with subject “PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION 2018”.
  • Email should include the title of the photo and may have a write up not exceeding 100 words about the photo.
  • Contestant should self-certify that the photo is original. Plagiarism in any form is not permitted.
  • It is the responsibility of the contestant to secure permission from the required parties if models are used for the photo.
  • Adult Content, Content that advocates against an individual/group or organization, Copyrighted Material, Drug/Alcohol and Tobacco-related contents are NOT permitted.
  • Parents or legal guardian of the contestant should certify that the photograph was taken by the contestant without any adult assistance.

Rules for Vocal/ Instrumental music

  • Maximum allotted time for a performance is 5 minutes for Vocal and 4 minutes for Instrumental music. Points will be deducted if the time limit is not adhered to.
  • Shruti box can be used for Eastern classical vocal solo, no other background music or accompaniment will be permitted including Karaoke music.
  • Lip synching with an already recorded song will not be permitted for competitive singing and non-competitive singing.
  • Karaoke music or participant singing will not be permitted for Instrumental Music.
  • Karaoke will be permitted for Non-Classical solo, Western Music solo and Group Song categories.
  • Mimicking pre-recorded music on the stage will not be permitted for playing any competitive/ noncompetitive Instrumental Music.
  • Performers should bring their musical instrument to perform an instrumental music item.
  • Handheld microphone(s) and microphone stands will be provided. Performers must make arrangements for instruments, props, keyboard, etc. if needed.

Rules for Dance items

  • For Classical solo dance, maximum allotted time for a performance is 5 minutes.
  • For Non-Classical solo dance, maximum allotted time for a performance is 5 minutes.
  • For Group Dance maximum allotted time for a performance is 5 minutes.
  • Points will be deducted if time limit is not adhered to.
  • If dance is performed based on pre-recorded music, music files must be provided in MP3 format via email at saregama@gama-austin.com no later than Feb 13th, 2018, midnight.

 

NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE TO THESE RULES.
